Hump Day- September 20, 2017

What is hump day? It’s Wednesday. The hump to your work week. 2 days down and 2 days to go. On hump days I will be sharing articles, videos, or other form of entertainment. It will include links to other posts I have liked throughout the week. Some are parenting articles, others are personal finance ones, and occasionally there will be a random funny article. Enjoy!

On this day

In 451 Flavius Aetius, a Roman General defeated Attila the Hun, stopping his advance on Rome. Attila waged many battles, some successful and others not so, but the Roman Empire feared him.

The Huns themselves were Eurasian nomads and showed up around 370 AD to Europe. They had quite a large empire in their peak as seen below.

Fritz from the Retirement Manifesto had a guest post this week on Financial Samurai. Two of my favorite writers unite, so you know good things were gonna happen. He discusses why we should not settle for a good retirement, when you can go for a great one. He made some very solid points and even made me rethink some of my current plans. Thanks Fritz!

Speaking of great, what about that new iPhone X…anyone going to get it? I personally am leaning toward a Pixel phone since work lets me use their iPhone. While I personally don’t buy individual stocks, I wish I had bought some apple back in the past, much like Forrest Gump…well what if you can’t afford it now? Well KvD at KINFO Social Investing makes a good point that maybe we should by Apple’s suppliers. They will be cheaper and still see the gains a product like the iPhone X brings…I personally am going to wait for the iPhone 9, but as some Twitterer the other day pointed out, 7 indeed ate 9.

Well I may not be content that I did not buy Apple stock in the 80’s, but alas that is life. What I have to figure out is how to be content being an MD. Passive Income MD sure makes it sound easy. He recommends being more than a doctor as the secret to a long, happy career. I couldn’t agree with him more. This is why I do Kung Fu and blogging….so thanks for reading and if you ever come visit I will give you a karate chop…wait that doesn’t sound right.

Speaking of contentment, being grateful can lead to being content. The White Coat Investor recently expressed his gratitude to the mentors that shaped his financial path. It is a nice article introducing me to some new thinkers (well old but new to me) in the field.

Speaking of grateful, I am grateful to White Coat Investor for getting me on the right financial journey and inspiring me to write. He also was the one who introduced me to a backdoor Roth IRA. It is great to learn how to put money into the Roth, but what if you want to draw on it before you’re 59.5 years old? FIRE anyone? Well Mustard Seed Money put together a very easy to understand Roth Conversion Ladder basics and for anyone thinking about using Roth dollars early, this is a good plan.

Finally, what if you retire and then there is a bear market? This is everyone’s worst nightmare…at least I imagine it is. Well don’t you fret. The Wall Street Physician discusses the rollercoaster ride of retirement on a guest post on Physician on Fire. Basically a lower withdrawal rate sure does help smooth out the bumps.

There you have it. A great round up of posts from this week. As for me, I am currently in Monterey Bay with the wife and kid on our way to Santa Barbara for a wedding. Too bad the Pacific Coast Highway is still closed after a landslide and not set to open any time soon. So no ocean side traveling for us.

Great roundup and thanks for the shout out!

The iPhone X got quite a bit of buzz, I am currently on iPhone 7 and quite happy with it, I have upgraded every second release so far so I´ll probably wait for the 9 model as well. Or maybe it will be called iPhone XI now, who knows 🙂

I am on the iPhone 6, I think….and since work pays for it I feel no urgency to increase or improve it. If you are waiting for the 9, I will be curious to see if they actually make one or as you said, they will be just leaping to the Roman numerals. I can’t imagine the new features continue to be that much better to make it worth the price, especially now that many US providers do not provide subsidized purchases of the phone. I was ready to spend $200 but not $700 for the new, latest greatest phone.

Thanks for the roundup, DDD. I love the your proposed Hump Day feature. And I love Fritz, Sam, Mustard Seed, and White Coat. I’ve read the Fritz post but not the others. Ah, the work of a FIRE enthusiast is never done. Cheers, my friend.

Never done. I spend more and more of my day reading articles. I better retire before this cuts into my day life.

I still have an iPhone 5 and it was getting pretty decrepit (my Otter box) so I bought a new otter box for $8 and it LOOKS like a new phone now except that the battery only lasts a few hours lol. That’s wonderful your workplace pays for an iPhone for you! I like how Apple is using Roman Numerals now to jazz up their marketing. Pretty soon we will see an iPhone XVIII lol.

It is the super bowl of phones! The battery life would get a bit annoying but definitely not worth switching phones yet.

Bah, the iPhone thing is always funny to me. I can’t believe they manage to think up a “new and revolutionary” phone each year. Of course, with a higher price tag each year, too. Jinkies. I’m hanging onto my Nexus phone until it falls to pieces, but after that I would upgrade to a Pixel. Android fo’ evah.

I have been on the iPhone band wagon for along time, but since my work now gives me one I am thinking about making the jump to Android. I particularly want to try the GoFI network and see how the coverage is in my area. I still haven’t bought a phone yet because dropping $600 on one seems crazy. Maybe the Pixel 1 is going to get cheaper here soon…will let you know once I get there.
