Hump Day – December 20, 2017

What is hump day? It’s Wednesday. The hump to your work week. 2 days down and 2 days to go. On hump days I will be sharing articles, videos, or other form of entertainment. It will include links to other posts I have liked throughout the week. Some are parenting articles, others are personal finance ones, and occasionally there will be a random funny article. Enjoy!

On this hump day

Back on December 20th, 1803 the French flag lowered in New Orleans to mark formal transfer of Louisiana Purchase from France to the US for $27 million dollar. This was 828,000 square miles for $15 million dollars or the equivalent of $250 million dollars in 2016 dollars. This was quite the deal.

As a former New Orleanian (and the father of a native New Orleanian) I love the history of this town. Where else in the US is there a city that was owned by both the French and the Spanish.

The French owned it from 1699 until they gave it up to Spain in 1762. Then Napoleon retook ownership in 1800. Take this and add a Haitian culture from the people that migrated there in 1809 after the Haitian revolution and you have the most unique city in our country. In fact, I would argue it is the northern most Caribbean city as the feel is much more laissez faire kind of place then most of the US (particularly both the Deep South and the Puritan inspired North East).

Le bon temps roule!

Hump day articles

Passive Income MD, who recently joined the White Coat Investor Network, had a great take on Bit coin in Whats the Deal with Bitcoin? Like most out there I wish I had bought it 5 years ago, but alas I did not have funny money to play with back then. Now it is booming and we will see if and when it crashes.

It is the end of the year and tax plans have changed for 2018 with the Congressional overhaul. This may mean that next year your tax bracket and deductions will be quite different. So consider opening and donating to a donor advised fund this year as Physician on Fire nicely pointed out on his Sunday Best this past week.

On other exciting personal finance blogging news, J. Money at Budgets are Sexy decided to call it quits in Why I FIRE’d Myself from Rockstar Finance. If you do not know what Rockstar Finance is, you should go check it out. It is a forum for all things money….And another favorite blogger of mine, ESI Money bought the site! Here is why he bought Rockstar Finance. Good stuff and I know the forum is going to continue to thrive.

Hard to believe December has come and gone. Hanukah is nearing an end, the solstice is tomorrow, and Christmas will soon be upon us. I hope it has been an excellent December.

As for me, I have had so many ideas to write about but no energy/desire to do so. I am hoping it will come back once we are out of this apartment (January!) and into our new rental home. I think once the insurance adjuster gives us our settlement estimate (also January!) then we can start some serious planning on whether we can afford to rebuild or not.

So here is to the end of the year and the rolling in of the new year…have a great holiday and talk soon!

I may live in the upper Midwest, but I remain Cajun. I’m a Prairie Cajun.

Thanks for the mention. Trying my best not to invest in Bitcoin out of FOMO. It’s quite difficult though when everyone and their mom is talking about it.

Best of luck with the home situation!

Andrew Jackson’s battle of New Orleans is the ONLY reason the middle of the country isn’t British. The wily Jackson dug a trench and built a berm giving him tactical advantage creaming the Brits with Blacks, Tennesseans, Indians, a rag tag group fighting side by side for freedom. If Jackson had failed, that light colored area in the Map would have been under a different flag and the US would have been 1/3 it’s present size. We would have a very different history. The Brit intention was to take Nolo and then sail up the Mississippi.

Funny how those things work out. I have been to this battlefields and am always impressed how some singular events can trigger massive changes.

I hear ya on the lots of ideas and no energy. I have been coming up with a bunch of ideas, but then either forget about them (so I started journaling them down) or I start writing and then get bored of it. It is a vicious cycle. I’m hoping for some new energy and drive in the new year. Think Santa can wrap that up and put it under the tree?

Santa hopefully will show up with some motivation. I use Google docs to start ideas. I have about 20 ready to be written right now….
