Fun for free

As a Dad who is owning his Dollars and Debts, I still have to provide educational and entertaining activities for my son. First off, I do believe kids can keep themselves active with just their imagination and a cup or a ball or whatever. Still, I think it is nice for my son to have some activities….So what do we do to save some cash? I try to find fun for free (or on the cheap):

The public library

This is a great place to meet people, read books, check out books, etc. My wife is great about going and checking out 5-10 childrens books, keeping them at home for 2-3 weeks and then going back and exchanging them. Plus, there are weekly events like story time, etc. I absolutely love the public library and am pissed I didn’t use it more in the past. Now I download a book on my iPhone from the library and am ready to read it anywhere I have some time.

A children’s museum

Okay well this is not exactly free but for $145 we get access to the museum for ourselves and a family member or two. Plus there is reciprocity for other museums. Here is my son digging the trains and various locks!

Local seasonal events

Its October and Pumpkin patches are everywhere. We have already been to three and all for free. We saw tractors (you could get rides for a few bucks), animals, and even jumped in a  corn pit. We even met a nice couple with a kid aged similarly to ours and will be hanging out soon. There are plenty of events to be done, apple picking, cherry picking, christmas time events, and sometimes even free concerts. Just pick up the local paper/magazine and find out where the events are.

Outdoors fun

Hiking, kayaking, swimming, basically anything using nature. If you are fortunate to live in a space with nature then get out there. Even if it is Central Park in NYC, you don’t have an excuse to enjoy good weather and some nature.

So get out there and find some free (at least relatively cheap) events to take you and the family out! You don’t have to spend money to have fun, explore, and meet people! What are some
