Hump day – April 5th, 2017

What is hump day? It’s Wednesday. The hump to your work week. 2 days down and 2 days to go. On hump days I will be sharing articles, videos, or other form of entertainment. It will include links to other posts I have liked throughout the week. Some are parenting articles, others are personal finance ones, and occasionally there will be a random funny article. Enjoy!

On this date

In 2016, San Francisco became the first US city to mandate full paid parental leave. This was a big deal because previously some states (including California) only offered partial pay during parental leave. For example, in California parents would receive 55% pay for 6 weeks. With this law, employers and the government paid 100% of the salary. Here is a New York Times article regarding the policy.  This is a big win for parents in the Bay Area and can support time off without financial strain for families.

Hump day parenting

This post by Michael Howard regarding “5 road trips every family should take before your kids grow up” is worth the read. I imagine the San Francisco to San Diego trip will be one I make in the near future. I am actually planning a trip in September to LA, but debating if a train may be more fun for my toddler. The Chicago to New Orleans track also seems epic.

Hump day finances

While not pure finances, Fritz at the Retirement Manifesto Blog wrote a post this week discussing his decision to move retirement homes after only 1 year. He calls it “How to move your retirement from good to great.” I think he makes some excellent posts and I could not agree with him more. If you see yourself in a situation you can improve on, then do it! Don’t putz around regretting your decisions. Move from good to great.

Hump day randomness

In 2014, Arnold Schwarzenegger worked with OMaze to raise funds for after school programs. If you donated money you had a could win a chance to crush things with Arnold in his tank! I am a huge Arnold fan, so I donated. Sadly I did not win but I still think this video/commercial for the fundraiser is epic. Enjoy and go crush your Wednesday.

Final thoughts

Last week I had 10 days off. I was fortunate to travel home to see my family and then off to New Orleans to see some friends. My time off reminded me that my social connections are what truly make me happy (no retiring to a remote cabin for me) and that I really enjoy time off (should I rethink early retirement?). It is good to take time off to revaluate the future as I did this weekend.

Have a great Wednesday!

I need to find a way to get 10 days off a week, every week. 😉

I’ll bet you had a great time in New Orleans — I’ve been at least a dozen times, and I always discover something new. Last time, I took a city tour that brought us down to the ninth ward where new homes have been built to replace the completely flooded neighborhoods. It was moving to see.

    Cheers!

You will have plenty of days off soon. New Orleans is my home and the birth place of my son. We love it and hope to keep going back every year.

Friday through Sunday…it was awesome but a rare occurrence. One of the benefits of being employed instead of owning my own practice. Missing time from my practice does not stress me out because I am not really loosing money. Well at least it is not as palpable as if I owned my own practice.

You know, maybe I don’t like these hump day posts as much as I originally thought I did since they are a stark reminder of just how quickly Wednesdays (and weeks, in general) come and go! 😉

Oh man, tell me about it. I was writing the post Tuesday night and was wondering how quickly the week had gone by.
