Hump day May 3, 2017: On this day

You can thank this date in 1978 for the first time SPAM was sent. It was on this date that the first unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail (i.e. spam) was sent by Digital Equipment Corporation to every ARPAnet address on the US west coast. ARPAnet was the precursor to the internet and you can thank that marketing representative (Gary Thuerk) for the start if spam. He worked with engineer Carl Gartley to send an email about the first DEC computer capable of connecting easily to ARPAnet. Some call this the first SPAM, others argue it was technically not SPAM as ARPAnet was for contractual work. That the first true SPAM occured in the 1990s. Either way, this is your bit of today in history for today.

And now for the posts

Posted on National Super Hero Day (yes there is literally a day for everything) The White Coat Investor (one of my favorite sites) writes about Your SuperPower- Not Sucking at Money. Unfortunately this a rare super power but much easier to learn then jumping over buildings.

High Income Parents discuss how you should Pursue Graduation in Four Years Like Your Hair is on Fire. I agree and put my mouth where my money was (or maybe my money where my mouth is) and graduated in 3 from college. Med school did cost me a pretty penny but I went to a state school in a inexpensive city (Memphis, the land of BBQ and Blues!) and found a way to get my Master’s in Public Health for free!

Chief Mom Officer has started a nice series with professional, high earning mothers on her site. Her latest interview was with Hatton1, a Ob/gyn who has reached FI but without the RE. Find her interview here. It is worth the read. My favorite advice is that it is not the lattes that will keep you from success, but the homes and car purchases.

Finally, for some laughs J Money at Budgets are sexy covered some great money jokes last week here. I personally like fart jokes, but here are some other great ones.

Final thoughts

This week I have heard of some unexpected deaths. No-one close to me, but still it always gives me pause. While in this society most of us work until we are in our 60s, the question is if we will actually make it to our 60s. Does that mean we should not plan for the future? Of course not.

I still support the idea of living for the present while planning for the future. Find ways to enjoy your life now while saving, but also consider saving more now so you can retire early. For me part time work (80-90%) could be as soon as 3-5 years from now. This could provide sanity and time off while working a longer career (20 years). Or maybe I will work at a 100% for 10 years and call it quits. Either way I am living for the present but planning for an early exit compared to the masses. Consider doing the same…
