Hump day- Wednesday May 17, 2017

Welcome to hump day May 17th! Today I am announcing that I will be changing my publication dates on this site. I have been posting Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Going forward I will be posting Wednesday Hump Day posts and Saturday posts. This will allow me more time to think through my topics and hopefully provide high yield and more useful items for you! I still may have an occasional Monday post (like the upcoming week 3 and week 4 round ups). Also sign up for my email list so that I can send you new posts and the occasional news letter! Okay, on to today’s lecture.

What is hump day? It’s Wednesday. The hump to your work week. 2 days down and 2 days to go. On hump days I will be sharing articles, videos, or other form of entertainment. It will include links to other posts I have liked throughout the week. Some are parenting articles, others are personal finance ones, and occasionally there will be a random funny article. Enjoy!

On this day

In 1962, on this day, Marin County (north of San Francisco) withdrew as a Bart district. Now for those of you outside of the Bay Area this really doesn’t matter. For us Bay Area people, this reshaped how this area has grown. BART travels throughout San Francisco and heads to the East Bay (Oakland and beyond). As you can see, the train goes east and somewhat south.

The original plan (a good overview of the history if found here) in the 1950s was for the rail to go south into San Mateo County and north into Marin County. Both plans were initially approved. However, as planning progressed, San Mateo County pulled out. The county officials were concerned about the tax burden on their community. Plus they already had a commuter train with Southern Pacific.

Once San Mateo pulled out, Marin was forced to pull out due to concern that their tax base could not support the cost. This seems quite ridiculous considering Marin county is now one of the most wealthiest places in the country. Interestingly my home county (WIlliamson) is above Marin! I would have never guessed that.

The other controversy was that the railway would run under the Golden Gate Bridge. There was a lot of back and forth between various engineers about whether the Bridge could handle the weight. In the end it was determined that the Bridge would work fine, but the vote was already in and they said no to the Bart.

So now there is no train system going North out of San Francisco. Some of this will be improved with the Smart Train but this soon to be running train still does not connect to San Francisco. A commuter will have to take it to Larksburg and grab a ferry from there to the city. Not perfect, but better.

Hump day finances!

So you know I like decluttering and simplicity. Not that I am a minimalist, more of a moderatist. Still the idea of simplicity appeals to me. High Income Parents recently wrote a nice article called Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication. It was featured on Rockstar Finance so most of you may have already read it. If not, then go check it out.

ESI money had a nice post about how to retire on one million dollars or less. One million seems like a lot, but not a lot when you are talking about retirement. Still he makes some good points and it is worth reading.

Hump day fire!

Another article featured on Rockstar Finance. The original early retirement dude discussed the history of FIRE. It goes way back. So if you are a history buff, check it out. For me the future is more important then the past, but I guess it is good to know where you came from to know where you are going.

Hump day success!

Think Save Retire dropped some LBJ knowledge on success. Another history lesson I guess but a good one. For instance, you should remember names and be interesting. I am good at one of these and not the other. Still if you can do both, you armor likely to be successful. Let me know what you think of this.

Finally it is time for some hump day humor. If you have some time, check out the 50 Greatest Adult Jokes Hiding in Kids Cartoons. There are a lot of short video clips and they are G rated but imply at least PG-13 rating.
