Hump Day May 24, 2017
What is hump day? It’s Wednesday. The hump to your work week. 2 days down and 2 days to go. On hump days I will be sharing articles, videos, or other form of entertainment. It will include links to other posts I have liked throughout the week. Some are parenting articles, others are personal finance ones, and occasionally there will be a random funny article. Enjoy!
On this date
Ok so on this date some of my favorite childhood (and adult things) collided. I am a huge space nerd. I think humans going into space is pretty amazing. My love started with Star Trek: The Next Generation. Nothing like watching Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Data discover new worlds. On this date, in 1993, Star Trek had their first real life episode on the show. Dr. Mae Jemison was on the episode “Second Chances“.
Mae Jemison has lived a very interesting life. She is the first African-American woman to go to space flying on Endeavour on September 12, 1992. As a physician (general practitioner) she served in the Peace Corp from 1985 to 1987. She flew one mission, STS-47, in 1992 conducting experiments in life and material sciences. So I hope this post brings a little attention to our space program.

Ok so now for some posts I have enjoyed reading in the past week.
Mad Money Monster talks about what they are not willing to do to get to financial independence. In their article We’re reaching financial independence without bikes or baked beans they happily discuss the things they do not do. The things that would detract from happiness. I get that and thing that everyone has to do what is right for them. The path to FI has many roads.
Physician on Fire has a guest post of a 37 year old retired Ob/gyn. Looks like she beat even PoF to the early retirement front. In Retired from Medicine at 37: The Finances Behind Her Decision , Valerie A Jones, MD covers the steps she took to get to FI. They are simple but effective steps that we physicians should try to emulate.
High Income Parents contemplated whether they Should Pay Down Debt or Save for an Emergency Fund? This sheet has a pretty sweet excel sheet covering various debt pay down vs saving scenarios. It seems that if they could do it again they would save more and use the gains to pay off the low interest debt. I often debate what the right choice is and discussed my thoughts on Emergency Funds here.
Finally, Jaime Declutters covers How Minimalism Has Improved My Life. While I am more of a moderate, I love decluttering and can appreciate her sentiment. I have discussed decluttering various parts of my life here, here, and here.
Final thoughts
How quickly time flies. We are approaching June. Graduations are underway and summer is coming at full force. While we are taking one trip this summer to Colorado, we are glad to be missing the school break rush. One benefit of having a toddler is our vacations are not dependent on his schedule yet. That will change soon enough, but for now we prefer traveling in the off peak times.

Have fun on your trip! I too have a toddler, and don’t look forward to the days of squeezing in trips during school vacations. This year, we inadvertently hit spring break week in Utah and were practically stepping over people on some of our hikes.
Until “real school” starts, we hope to take full advantage of traveling. Even after that, I have little to no qualms about pulling kids out of school up until elementary or even middle school. It shouldn’t bee too hard to convince the school our trip to Hawaii is educational!
Traveling during school breaks is tough. We did the same thing accidentally when we went to Mexico. It was no fun. I am with you, better to pull the kids out of school and travel when it is quiet. From a work stand point it is easier to get off too (everyone with families in school requests that time off).

My wife and boys will spend the better part of the summer at our little lake home, and I’ll be able to join them a fair amount, having worked a particularly busy spring to score some more time off over the summer.

Happy Hump Day everyone! We don’t have fun trips planned for this summer, unfortunately (womp womp). Pretty much just visiting family who live all over the state, so that’ll deplete most of our time and extra gas money. 🙂 We do hope to take a trip to Europe to celebrate paying off our student loans next year. 🙂
I like the idea of treating yourself after a major milestone. For me, it will be going part time after my student loan is paid off.
